About Hospice

When is it Time?

Picture
Hospice begins when both the patient or caregivers and the physician determine it’s the right time. Usually, hospice comes in to support patients and families in the final stages of life-limiting illness, or when caring for someone with a terminal illness proves too difficult.
For individuals who choose the hospice benefit, the life expectancy is anticipated to be 6 months, if the disease follows its normal course. At Pilgrimage Hospice, our focus is always to provide the right care, all the time, with a focus on comfort and quality of life. There is no time limit on quality of life, and we strive to ensure eligible individuals receive the best end-of-life care and service.

Below are some examples of symptoms or situations that may indicate that it is time to consider hospice care:
  • Frequent visits to the Emergency Room
  • When you hear the doctor say "there is little else we can do"
  • Symptoms are affecting your quality of life
  • You are depressed and anxious
  • A decline in overall health and ability to care for oneself is no longer possible
  • You need more or continued support from your loved ones
These examples are not indicators for eligibility, but signs that point to a discussion about hospice care and service. Hospice has proven to be the choice that provides the highest quality of life with patient comfort and support as the foundation of all care for individuals with a life-limiting illness. Statistically, those receiving hospice care live longer, more comfortable lives.

Medicare provides guidelines to help a physician determine a patient's hospice eligibility.  Pilgrimage hospice will provide a complimentary screening to determine if eligibility for hospice services.  Please call us as 412.489.6874.
